New Zealand - Christchurch

Christchurch is located on the south east coast of New Zealands South Island.

The Earthquake which hit Christchurch in February should not put you off holidaying in the area. Part of the central city is still cordoned off to ensure safety. This cordon is receding as more of the city is deemed safe and open for business. Some parts of the city will remain closed until rebuilding has taken place.

Christchurch remains the gateway to the amazing experiences that are on offer in the Canterbury region on the South Island.

Christchurch's climate is defined as warm summers and cold winters. The southern Alps are only around 30 minutes from Christchurch. The closeness of the Alps are partly responsible for the chilly winds experienced in the winter. The summer climate is often around the low 30s with sea breezes keeping the temerature from reaching much higher.

Christchurch is traditionally thought to still be one of the most English of the New Zealand cities. It is only gradually becoming more cosmopolitan due to the increase in immigration. The English past is still prevelant with an Anglican Cathedral, Gothic architecture, sleepy rivers and city trams.

There are lots of attractions to keep even the well heeled entertained in Christchurch. Take a trip to the International Antartic Centre, take a ride on the Tranz-Alpine rail journey, visit the Air Force museum, nature reserves, take a river boat cruise or a balloon ride to get the best views of the surrounding canterbury area.
